Clothing & Equipment

Navigating the vast array of cricket clothing & equipment options can be a challenge.

We've put together this guide to help.

As a club we recognise that clothing and equipment costs can be a major barrier to participation in cricket, especially to those just beginning what we hope will be a lifelong love of the game.

To make things easier, we organise collections of pre-loved kit that parents want to pass down to younger age-groups at the club.

We provide softball cricket bats and balls that are used by our younger age-groups. For hardball cricket, we have a range of pads and helmets available to juniors to use. Please note, abdo guards (see below) cannot be borrowed.

If you have any pre-loved clothing or equipment that you would like to pass on, please let us know by contacting our Junior Administrator Liane Langdon.

CLOTHING

Traditionally, players wear white clothing (“whites”) for matches. We encourage players to wear official Meanwood CC playing shirts for games. These are available from our clothing supplier PC Sports and are available in long sleeve and short sleeve.

Meanwood CC training tops, hoodies, trousers and caps are also available to order and can be personalised with your player’s initials during the ordering process.

Non-branded cricket whites are also widely available and players are welcome to wear whatever they’re comfortable in at training.

SHOES

Regular sports trainers are fine for softball cricket. When players move to hardball, they have the option to use more structured cricket shoes, which offer more protection and support.

These are available with rubber soles (for use indoors and on artificial surfaces) or with spikes (for playing on grass only).

For hardball, the following equipment is required.

BATS
Bats must not be too big or heavy for the player as this will restrict their movement and the shots they can play. Bats made from Kashmiri Willow are fine for softball cricket, but you’ll need an English Willow bat for hardball.

PADS
Pads (or “leg guards”) are available in right-handed, left-handed and ambidextrous types.

GLOVES
To check sizing for gloves, measure from the start of the wrist to the tip of the longest finger.

HELMETS
Helmets are compulsory for hardball cricket. They should feel comfortable but firm.

ABDO GUARD
Also known as a box, these protect the most sensitive area of the body and are compulsory for boys and recommended for girls.

THIGH PAD
Available to protect the front leg, inside back leg, or both. They are not compulsory, but are recommended.

CRICKET BALLS
Players up to U13 use a Junior Cricket Ball (4.75oz) and at U15 and over, a Senior Cricket Ball (5.5oz).

BAGS
Cricket bags broadly come in either wheelie or backpack styles and are recommended to keep everything together.
